املاح کلسیم و منیزیم موجود در آب را اصطلاحا سختی می نامند. آب در طبیعت ضمن عبور از زمین های آهکی و لایه های دو لومیتی، کلسیم و منیزیم را در خود حل می کند. ترکیبات مربوط به بی کربنات کلسیم و منیزیم در آب را سختی موقت و املاح مربوطه به سولفات، کلرور و نیترات کلسیم یا منیزیم را سختی دائم می نامند. مجموع سختی دائم و موقت سختی کل آب را تشکیل می دهد.
آبهای سخت بویژه در مصارف صنعتی و تاسیساتی، مشکلات متعددی را به دلیل بالا بودن قآبلیت رسوب گذاری و خورندگی ایجاد می کنند که اهم آن عبارتند از :
• تشدیدخوردگی و رسوب گذاری در تاسیسات حرارتی
• کاهش راندمان انتقال حرارت و افزایش مصرف بی رویه انرژی به دلیل وجود لایه های ضخیم رسوبی
• ایجاد لکه و رسوبات سفید رنگ بر روی سطوح شیشه، فلز، پارچه، لباس و نظایر آن .
• کاهش ظرفیت انتقال جریان آب در اثر تشکیل رسوبات سخت در جداره داخلی لوله ها و مخازن.
• افزایش مصرف مواد شوینده به دلیل کاهش خاصیت کف کنندگی آنها در آب سخت.
