ویژگی‌های فیزیکی آب نظیر بو، مزه، کدورت، درجه حرارت و رنگ آب می‌تواند آب را برای مصرف کننده نامطلوب سازد.
بو و طعم
اساسی ترین مساله در مورد آب تصفیه شده عدم داشتن بو و طعم می‌باشد، بوی آب قاعدتا ارتباط نزدیکی با طعم آن دارد. عوامل مختلفی در ایجاد طعم و بوی آب موثر است. ازجمله این عوامل جلبک‌ها، تجزیه گیاهان آبزی، محصولات حاصل از کلرینه نمودن آب نظیر کلر و فنل‌ها و آب‌های راکدی که در انتهای سیستم توزیع ساکن می‌مانند.
کدورت آب
پدیده ای است که میزان زلال بودن یا شفافیت آن را مشخص می‌کند و یکی از معیارهای تعیین کیفیت ظاهری آب است. کدورت معمولا به علت وجود مواد معلّق در آب ایجاد می‌شود. در برنامه های تهیه، تامین و توزیع آب بهداشتی معیار کدورت نیز مورد توجه است. و معمولا برای کدورت‌های قابل توجه از واحد J.T.U برای سنجش استفاده می‌شود و برای کدورت‌های پایین از واحد N.T.U استفاده می‌گردد.
آب خالص معمولا بی رنگ است. رنگ آب آلوده نشده می‌تواند ناشی از مواد در حال گندیدگی زمین یا نمک‌های فلزی موجود در طبیعت (آهن و منگنز) باشد. آلاینده های صنعتی نیز می‌توانند بوجود آورنده طیف وسیعی از رنگ‌ها در آب‌های پذیرنده باشند. رنگ آب معمولا با واحد هیزن که معروف به مقیاس پلاتین ـ کبالت است، بیان می‌شود.
دمای آب
از آنجایی که گوارایی آب مربوط به میزان اکسیژن محلول در آن می‌باشد هرقدر دمای آب بالاتر باشد میزان حلال یّت اکسیژن محلول در آن کمتر خواهد بود لذا آب به اصطلاح گرم با دمای 20 درجه بالاتر اکسیژن کمتری در بر دارد و مورد رضایت مصرف کننده نیست در حالی که آب با دمای بین 5 تا15 درجه سانتیگراد اکسیژن محلول بیشتری در خود دارد که گوارا و مطلوب است البته دمای پایین تر از 5 درجه نیز برای نوشیدن مطلوب نیست.
