این فیلترها از یک بستر شن دانه‌بندی شده با خلوص 98% و یک صفحه مشبک با 50 تا 70 عدد پستانک در هر متر مربع جهت آبکشی و جلوگیری از خروج ذرات شن از دستگاه تشکیل شده است. اندازه ذرات شن که بصورت دانه‌بندی شده و طبقاتی بروی صفحه مشبک قرار گرفته‌اند بر حسب اندازه ذرات معلق در آب تعیین می‌شود. ذرات درشت شن در قسمت بالا و ذرات ریز در قسمت پایین قرار می گیرند.
بخاطر لزوم انجام دو عمل سرویس دهی دستگاه و شستشوی معکوس در دستگاه فیلتر شنی, مدار لوله کشی این دستگاه طوری طراحی شده است که بصورت ساده‌ای هر دو عمل را انجام دهد. کنترل فیلتر شنی به سه روش کنترل با شیرهای دستی، کنترل با شیرهای چند راهه دستی و کنترل تمام اتوماتیک توسط شیرهای چند راهه اتوماتیک انجام می‌پذیرد.
