تصفیه مقادیر بالای آهن، منگنز، سولفات و سدیم از آب

سیستم اسمز معکوس (RO) قادر است مقادیر بالای آهن، منگنز، سولفات و سدیم را از آب حذف نماید. اما بدون در نظر گرفتن پیش تصفیه جهت حذف آهن و منگنز ،‌کارتریج ROممکن است هر دو هفته یکبار نیاز به تعویض داشته باشد. با پیش تصفیه موثر ، کارتریج‌های RO قادر هستند برای مدت نسبتا طولانی عمل تصفیه اقتصادی آبهای زیر زمینی با کیفیت پایین را انجام دهند.

مشکل ممبرانها این است که سوراخ‌های ریز آن‌ها به آسانی بوسیله مقادیر بالای آهن و منگنز گرفته می شوند. بنابراین حذف آهن و منگنز قبل از سیستم ROدر افزایش طول عمر سیستم ROبسیار مهم است. مقادیر بالای آهن و منگنز، بر اساس شکل آهن و منگنز می تواند از آب حذف شود. برخی از اشکال آهن و منگنز به آسانی بوسیله اکسیداسیون با استفاده از هوادهی، کلر یا پتاسیم پرمنگنات حذف می شوند. اکسیداسیون سبب می شود،‌ آهن و منگنز محلول به شکل نامحلول در آمده و ته نشین شوند.

سیستم RO به تنهایی قادر به تصفیه و حذف سدیم، سولفات‌ها، ‌سختی‌ها و کل جامدات حل شده (TDS) از آب می باشد، اما بدون در نظر گرفتن یک پیش‌تصفیه مناسب جهت حذف آهن و منگنز ، ممبرانهای ROحداکثر یکماه دوام می آورند. انجام تستهای اضافی برای اطمینان از تکرر این یافته ها و تعیین ارتباط بین   COD آب، فرم‌های آهن و منگنز و حذف آهن و منگنز با استفاده از گرانول‌های کربن فعال ضروری است.
