روش RO به کمک غشاهای ممبراین اولین بار در سال 1748 میلادی توسط ژان آنتونی نوله Jean Antoine Nollet انجام شد.
روش RO در 200 سال پس از ان همچنان به عنوان یک روش آزمایشگاهی باقی ماند .
درسال 1949 میلادی دانشگاه کالیفرنیا در آمریکا برای اولین بار روش RO را به کمک غشاءهای ممبراین برای تصفیه آب دریا به کاربرد.
بعدها تحقیقات انجام شده توسط این دانشگاه و دانشگاه فلوریدا منجربه تولید موفقیت آمیز آب آشامیدنی از آب دریا در اواسط دهه 1950 میلادی شد . اما حجم آب آشامیدنی بدین روش همچنان برای مصارف تجاری ناکار آمد بود ، تا اینکه درطول زمان و با پیشرفت تدریجی تکنولوژی کار به جا یی رسید که دراواخر سال 2001 میلادی در کل جهان 15200پروژه تولید آب آشامیدنی به این روش در دست اجرا درآمد.
