فیلتر شنی به طور معمول به عنوان اولین مرحله تصفیه در سیستمهای تصفیه آب متعارف مورد استفاده قرار می گیرند و جهت جداسازی ناخالصی های معلق موجود در آب کاربرد دارند.

هنگامیکه افت فشار دو سر فیلترشنی در حدود 0/8- 0/6بار ثبت گردد، زمان آن رسیده است که فیلتر از حالت سرویس خارج شده وبا ورود جریان آب به صورت معکوس(Back Wash)، بسترها مورد شستشو قرار بگیرند. زمان شستشو بستگی به میزان کدورت آب ورودی دارد.
