– اگر غلظت یون ها بر حسب معادل کربنات کلسیم باشد در آن صورت همواره مجموع کاتیون های آب مساوی مجموع آنیون های آب خواهد بود (اصل خنثی بودن الکتریکی آب).
در گزارش آنالیز معمولاً غلظت آهن، منگنز و سیلیکا را به صورت یونی (معادل کربنات کلسیمی) بیان نمی کنند چون این مواد اغلب کلوییدی هستند.
پس واحد معادل کربناتی برای بیان غلظت بسیاری از یون ها بکار می رود.
سختی آب (hardness): مجموع غلظت کلسیم و منیزیم برابر سختی کل آب می باشد (واحد دیگر بیان غلظت یونها).
