نیتریت ونیترات از دیگر مواد موجود درآب می باشند که معمولاً به مقدار نسبتاً کمی در آبهای طبیعی یافت می شوند ، احتمالاً ترکیبات نیتروژن دار از طریق فاضلاب های صنعتی و کشاورزی وتاحدودی صنعتی به این آبها وارد می شوند که با اکسید شدن این ترکیبات به نیترات توأم است، اداره بهداشت ایالات متحده آمریکا در ارتباط با استانداردهای آب آشامیدنی ،هیچگونه محدودیتی را در ارتباط با مقدار محتوی نیترات در آب عمل نکرده است .
اخیراً،مشخص شده که وجود غلضت های بالایی از نیترات بالای ppm ۱۰ دلیل آبی شدن رنگ نوزادان تحت عنوان methem eglobinemia می باشد معمولاً وجود چنین غلظت های بالایی مربوط به آب چاههایی در مناطق روستایی و نزدیک به منابع نفوذ سطحی می باشد.( البته این تحقیق مربوط به کشور آمریکا می باشد.)
▪ میزان نیترات در آب چند نقطه در شهر اراک و دو نوع آب معدنی:
ـ منطقه دارایی ۳۹.۶۵ ppm دماوند(آب معدنی) ۷ ppm
ـ منطقه دانشگاه ۱۵.۲ ppm پلور( آب معدنی ) ۲ ppm
