با توجه به ورود ذرات مختلف در آب ورودی به تصفیه خانه‌ها, به ویژه ریزش برگ در فصول مختلف سال, در صورت ورود این ذرات به سیستم تصفیه خانه موجب آسیب دیدگی یا گرفتگی پمپها, شیرآلات, خطوط لوله و سایر متعلقات می‌گردد. لذا به منظور جلوگیری از ورود این گونه ذرات به واحدهای تصفیه خانه می‌بایست از سیستم آشغالگیری مناسب(Screening) استفاده گردد.
در حال حاضر آشغالگیرهای مورد استفاده در کانالهای آب تصفیه خانه‌ها بصورت صفحه مشبک (Perforated plate) و یا صفحه میله ای(Bar Screen) ساخته شده و با زاویه نصب ۴۵ الی ۶۰ درجه در مسیرکانال انتقال آب یا فاضلاب قرار می‌گیرند. این آشغالگیرها اکثراً توسط بهره بردار به صورت دستی و با استفاده از چنگک تمیز می‌گردد. در برخی موارد نیز این آشغالگیرها از نوع مکانیکی و مجهز به قاب و چنگک جمع آوری آشغال می‌باشد.
لذا با توجه به اینکه در اکثر مواقع حجم زیادی از ذرات و جامدات در آب ورودی به تصفیه خانه وجود دارد, عدم جمع آوری مداوم آنها موجب مسدود شدن سریع آنها گردیده و می‌بایست به طور مداوم تمیز گردند. علاوه بر این بسیاری از ذرات ریز و باریک, با عبور از این گونه آشغالگیرها, وارد سیستم تصفیه خانه می‌گردد. لذا به منظور رفع این مشکلات و با استفاده از تکنولوژی روز دنیا می‌توان از سیستمهای آشغالگیری مدرنتر استفاده نمود که علاوه بر راندمان بالا در جداسازی ذرات و آشغالهای ریـــز, دارای قابلیت تمیـــز شدن خودکار (Self Cleaning) می‌باشند. لذا از این گونه سیستمـها, می‌توان به آشغالگیــــرهای پلکانی (Step Screening) اشاره نمود.
سیستم SSF دارای عملکرد بسیار ساده و قابلیت نصب در کانالهایی با عمق زیاد می‌باشد. سیستم پیشنهادی از جنس استیل ضدزنگ (Stainless Steel) ساخته شده و مجهز به تمیز کننده خودکار می‌باشد به طوری که علاوه بر راندمان بالا در حذف آشغالها و ذرات موجود در آب, به طور همزمان آشغالهای جمع آوری شده را منتقل وتخلیه می‌نماید.
یک مدل معمول از سیستم Step Screen سیستمی‌است که با زاویه متغیر در حدود ۴۰ تا ۵۳ درجه در کانال نصب گردیده و لذا می‌توان با توجه به شرایط محل نصب همچون عمق کانال و محدودیت فضا, شیب آن را تنظیم نمود. ارتفاع سطح تخلیه در حدود ۵/۳ متر بالاتر از کف کانال می‌باشد.
مشخصات و نحوه عملکرد دستگاه:
ساختار این سیستم بدین صورت است که تیغه‌ها با فواصل ۳ تا ۶ میلیمتر از یکدیگر و در ردیفهای موازی به صورت پلکانی بر روی هم قرار گرفته و بدین صورت صفحات حصیری شکل با ساختار پلکانی را تشکیل می‌دهند. این صفحات توسط موتوری بر روی یک زنجیر و چرخ دنده حرکت می‌نماید. لذا همانطوری که در شکل زیر نشان داده می‌شود آشغالها و ذرات (ذرات با اندازه بزرگتر از فاصله میان تیغه‌ها) موجود در آب در حین عبور از میان تیغه‌ها, توسط صفحات متحرک به صورت پیوسته و اتوماتیک حذف و از آب خارج می‌گردد.
