یکی از پرکاربردترین مصالح مورد استفاده در ساخت تصفیه­ خانه­ ها به خصوص تصفیه ­خانه­ های کوچک یا همان پکیج­ های تصفیه، فولاد است. فولاد به سبب مقاومت بسیار بالا و انعطاف­پذیری در ساخت هر شکل سازه و سرعت در ساخت مقبولیت زیادی به خصوص در ساخت تصفیه ­خانه­های واحدهای صنعتی و اجتماعات کوچک دارد.­ عمده نگرانی که در استفاده از این ماده وجود دارد بحث خوردگی است که این نگرانی با استفاده از پوششهای محافظتی استاندارد کاملاً  رفع شده است.

ویژگیهای استفاده از فولاد در ساخت سیستم­های تصفیه شامل موارد زیر است:

5-    نما و منظره این سیستم­ها کاملا قابل کنترل بوده و قابلیت هماهنگی با هر محیطی را دارند.

6-    نیاز به گودبرداری و عملیات ساختمانی زیادی نداشته و دارای حداقل مشکلات ناشی از کارهای ساختمانی در محل هستند.

7-    بدلیل خواص شیمیایی فولاد، استفاده از پوششهای حفاظتی در سطوح تماس فاضلاب با فولاد ضروری است.

8-    در شرایط عادی و بدون در نظرگرفتن تمهیدات لازم امکان مدفون ساختن این سیستم­ها وجود ندارد.
