محققان بیش از 700 نوع ماده شیمیایی مضر در آب شناسایی کرده اند که بررسی ها نشان داده این مواد عمدتاً ناشی از ورود پسابهای صنعتی، فاضلابهای شهری و سموم آفات نباتات در آبهای جاری و زیرزمینی می باشد.
با توجه به این که 60 درصد بدن ما انسانها آب می باشد هرگونه ناخالصی در آب تاثیر زیادی بر سلامتی بدن ما و همچنین پوست ما دارد. حتی مقدار کلر اضافه شده به آب با مواد آلی موجود در این آب ها ترکیب شده و ایجاد تری هالومتانها کلرات و سایر ترکیبات جانبی مضر و سمی در آب می کند که این مورد سرطان زا می باشد.
