سختی موقت : کلسیم و منیزیم بی کربنات محلول در آب را می گویند که در اثر جوشاندن آب تجزیه و رسوب می کند . حد اشباع این سختی ها در آب 450 میلی گرم در لیتر است .
سختی دائم : شامل کلیه املاح کلسیم و منیزیم به جز بی کربنات ها مانند سولفات ها ، کلریدها و نیترات های کلسیم و منیزیم محلول در آب می باشد . سختی دائم در اثر جوشاندن حذف نمی شود . حد اشباع این سختی ها در آب 1800 میلی گرم در لیتر است .
سختی کل : کل املاح کلسیم و منیزیم موجود در آب ، سختی کل نامیده می شود .
به علت بروز مشکلات متعدد آب سخت، در صنعت ، مصارف بهداشتی و غذایی سختی آب را کاهش می دهند.
متداولترین روش برای حذف سختی آب ، استفاده از سختی‌گیرهای تبادل یونی (رزینی) می‌باشد. رزین‌ها، کلسیم و منیزیم را با سدیم تعویض کرده و آب سخت را به آب نرم تبدیل می‌کنند به گونه ای که آب عبوری تنها حاوی نمک سدیم است . برای مصارف بهداشتی و غذایی بهتر آن است که از رزینهای نوع خوراکی استفاده شود . این رزین ها پس از مدتی تحت عنوان (( طول زمان سرویس )) نیاز به شستشوی معکوس (Back Wash) به مدت 10 تا 20 دقیقه دارد و توسط محلول آب و نمک نیاز به احیاء ( Regeneration ) به مدت 25 تا 45 دقیقه دارند.میزان نمک لازم برای احیاء هر لیتر رزین برابر0/25 کیلوگرم نمک می باشد ، که به صورت محلول10% برای احیاء استفاده می شود.
