1 ـ ناخالصی‌های معلق
نظیر ذرات معلق زنده و غیرزنده که در آب به صورت معلق یافت می‌شوند. این نوع ناخالصی را می‌توان در سه گروه، تقسیم بندی و مطالعه نمود.
الف) ذرات معلق زنده بیماری‌زا مانند عوامل بیماری‌زای موجد وبا، حصبه، شبه حصبه، انواع اسهال‌ها، تخم انگل‌ها مانند آسکاریس و عامل کیست هیداتید و ویروس‌ها، منشاء اصلی این دسته از ناخالصی‌ها فاضلاب شهری و حضور حیوانات اهلی یا وحشی در مجاورت منابع آب می‌باشد.
ب) ذرات معلق زنده غیربیماری‌زا مانند باکتری‌های ساپروفیت، اغلب جلبک‌ها و تک سلولی‌هایی که در طبیعت به وفور پیدا می‌شوند.
ج) ذرات معلق غیرزنده مانند رس، لیمون که ناشی از فرسایش سطح زمین و سطوح آبخیز می‌باشد.
از نظر فیزیکی ذرات بالا به دو گروه تقسیم می‌شوند گروهی که در حوضچه های ته نشینی و یا صافی‌ها جدا می‌شوند و گروهی که برای جدا کردن آن‌ها احتیاج به مواد منعقد کننده است تا از طریق لخته سازی، به ذرات درشت تری تبدیل شده و حذف شوند.
2 ـ ناخالصی‌های محلول
این دسته شامل املاح معدنی، ترکیبات آلی و گازهای محلول می‌باشند که می‌توان آن‌ها را به صورت زیر گروه بندی نمود:
الف) املاح محلول معدنی که اغلب به صورت املاح کلسیم، منیزیم، سدیم، آهن و منگنز می‌باشد که برخی از آن‌ها مصرف آب را محدود می‌نمایند که در جای خود بحث خواهد شد.
ب) گازهای محلول مانند اکسیژن، انیدرید کربنیک، هیدروژن سولفوره، ازت وغیره می‌باشند و این نوع ناخالصی نیز کیفیت شیمیایی آب را تحت تاثیر قرار داده و ممکن است باعث نامطلوب بودن آن شود.
